Mxr1 is a pathway-specific transcription factor that activates genes required for methanol utilization. It coordinates the transcriptional response when methanol is the sole or primary carbon source. Mxr1 binds specific cis-regulatory elements in the promoters of methanol-inducible genes. Its binding leads to strong transcriptional activation under methanol growth conditions. In biotechnology, it is indispensable for AOX1 induction and for the industrial utility of Komagataella pastoris as an expression platform.
